Figure 4D-2 illustrates the standards for horizontal location of signal
faces that are described more fully in Section 4D.15. The figure shows
the area located between two lines intersecting with the center of the
approach at a point of 3 meters (10 feet) behind the stop line, one making
an angle of approximately 20 degrees to the right of the center of the
approach extended, and the other making an angle of approximately 20 degrees
to the left of the center of the approach extended. The center of the
approach is shown as one-half of the approach width, which includes the
parking lane and the supplemental left turn lane.
The figure also shows that the minimum distance of signal faces from
the stop line is 12 meters (40 feet).
The maximum distance from the stop line for 200 mm (8 inches) signal
faces is shown as 35 meters (120 feet) unless a near-side signal face
is used, in which case the maximum distance is 45 meters (150 feet).
The maximum distance from the stop line for 300 mm (12 inches) signal
faces is shown as 45 meters (150 feet) unless a near-side supplemental
signal face is used.
Additional information is provided in Section 4D.15.
