Figure 1A-1 illustrates the process for experimenting with traffic control devices. Additional details are provided in Section 1A.10.

Step 1. The requesting jurisdiction submits a request to FHWA.

Step 2. The FHWA reviews the request.

Step 3. If approved, the requesting jurisdiction installs an experimental traffic control device. If it is not approved, the requesting jurisdiction responds to questions raised by the FHWA.

Step 4. Once installed, the experimental traffic control device is evaluated. At the same time, the requesting jurisdiction provides semi-annual reports to the FHWA division and headquarters.

Step 5. The requesting jurisdiction provides the FHWA a copy of the final report.
