Figure 3B-26. Examples of Markings for Preferential Lanes (Sheet
1 of 2)
This figure illustrates five examples of markings for preferential
lanes. The figure is composed of two sheets.
The figure shows examples of five vertical highways. Arrows show
that for all five examples the direction of travel for all lanes
is northbound. All examples are shown as lanes to the right of a
barrier, median, or centerline. All examples show a solid yellow
line on the left edge of the roadway, a solid white line on the
right edge of the roadway, and a broken white line separating non-preferential
lanes of through traffic. A legend shows a black arrow indicating
the direction of travel in the lanes and double asterisks denoting
an applicable symbol or word.
- Sheet 1 of the figure shows three examples, (a), (b), and (c):
- Example (a) shows physically separated permanent lane(s). Two
preferential lanes are shown to the right of a barrier or median.
A double asterisk denoting an applicable symbol or word is shown
in the center of each of the two lanes. The solid yellow line
on the left edge of the roadway is noted as ""Yellow
(or white if reversible)."
- Example (b) shows full-time concurrent lane(s) where enter/exit
movements are prohibited. One preferential lane is shown as the
leftmost lane of a total of four lanes on the roadway. A double
asterisk denoting an applicable symbol or word is shown in the
center of this lane. It is separated from the adjacent non-preferential
lane by a double solid wide white line. The solid yellow line
on the left edge of the roadway is noted as "Double yellow
if centerline of 2-way roadway."
- Example (c) shows concurrent lane(s) where enter/exit movements
are discouraged. One preferential lane is shown as the leftmost
lane of a total of four lanes on the roadway. A double asterisk
denoting an applicable symbol or word is shown in the center of
this lane. It is separated from the adjacent non-preferential
lane by a single solid wide white line. The solid yellow line
on the left edge of the roadway is noted as "Double yellow
if centerline of 2-way roadway."
