Figure 2F-2. Examples of Specific Service Sign Locations
This figure illustrates examples of specific service sign locations.
The figure shows a schematic depiction of sign locations for one
direction of travel in advance of and at an exit on a highway. The
travel direction on the highway for which signs are illustrated
is from bottom to top. The highway exit ramp is shown diverging
from the highway on the right and intersecting with a road shown
crossing under the highway.
A series of six signs are shown along the right side of the highway.
These six signs are shown placed a dimension of 240 m (800 ft) MIN
from each other. Starting from the bottom of the figure and proceeding
upward, the six signs shown are:
- Two examples of camping service signs, separated by the word
"OR": one sign with the words "CAMPING -
EXIT 44" above six blank rectangular panels arranged in two
rows of three panels each, and one sign with the words "CAMPING
- EXIT 44" above a single row of three blank rectangular
panels. Both signs are shown as horizontal rectangles with white
letters and borders on a blue background.
- Two examples of lodging service signs, separated by the word
"OR": one sign with the words "LODGING -
EXIT 44" above six blank rectangular panels arranged in two
rows of three panels each, and one sign with the words "LODGING
- EXIT 44" above a single row of three blank rectangular
panels. Both signs are shown as horizontal rectangles with white
letters and borders on a blue background.
- A horizontal rectangular sign with white letters and border
on a green background. This sign shows in four lines of legend
the numeral "56" on a U.S. Route shield, the word "Metropolis,
the word "Utopia," and "EXIT 1 MILE." A smaller
rectangular panel is shown above the right side of this sign,
with the words "EXIT 44."
- Two examples of food service signs, separated by the word "OR":
one sign with the words "FOOD - EXIT 44" above
six blank rectangular panels arranged in two rows of three panels
each, and one sign with the words "FOOD - EXIT 44"
above a single row of three blank rectangular panels. Both signs
are shown as horizontal rectangles with white letters and borders
on a blue background.
- Two examples of gas service signs, separated by the word "OR":
one sign with the words "GAS - EXIT 44" above
six blank rectangular panels arranged in two rows of three panels
each, and one sign with the words "GAS - EXIT 44"
above a single row of three blank rectangular panels. Both signs
are shown as horizontal rectangles with white letters and borders
on a blue background.
- A horizontal rectangular sign with white letters and border
on a green background. This sign shows in three lines of legend
the number "56" on a U.S. Route shield, the word "Metropolis,
and the word "Utopia." To the right of the second and
third lines of legend, a diagonally slanted arrow is shown pointing
up and to the right. A smaller rectangular panel is shown above
the right side of this sign, with the words "EXIT 44."
Just above the point where the exit ramp is shown diverging from
the highway, a horizontal rectangular green background sign is shown
with a white border and lettering with the word "EXIT"
on the top line and the numeral "44" and a diagonally
slanted arrow pointing up and to the right on the bottom line. The
point where the exit ramp is shown diverging from the highway is
circled with the notation "Travel distance for sign priority
should always be measured from this point."
On the right side of the exit ramp, a series of four signs are
shown. The first three of these signs are labeled, in order from
bottom to top, "CAMPING*", "LODGING*", and "FOOD*".
The fourth (topmost) sign in the series is denoted with an asterisk
and is illustrated as a horizontal rectangular blue background sign
with white legend and border divided horizontally by a white line.
It shows the word "GAS" above the line. Below the line,
two horizontal rows of blank panels are shown. In the top row of
panels, a short left-pointing arrow is shown to the left of three
blank horizontal rectangular panels. Under the second and third
panels, the words "1/2 MI" and "1 ½ MI"
respectively are shown. In the bottom row of panels, three blank
horizontal rectangular panels are shown to the left of a short right-pointing
arrow. Under the second and third panels, the words "1 MI"
and "2 ½ MI" respectively are shown. Adjacent to
these sign locations on the ramp is the notation: "*Specific
service ramp signs (as needed). Spacing should be at least 30 m
(100 ft) from the exit gore sign, from each other, and from the
ramp terminal." An arrow points to where the exit ramp intersects
the cross road, with the notation: "The travel distance to
be shown on signs should be measured from this point."
A separate illustration shows a schematic depiction of an exit
with a loop ramp. An arrow points to where the exit loop ramp meets
the cross roadway with the notation: "If a loop is to be signed,
the travel distance to be shown on signs should be measured from
here."
