Figure 2E-8. EXIT ONLY on Left with Diagrammatic Sign for Left
Lane Dropped at an Interchange
This figure shows examples of an EXIT ONLY on left with diagrammatic
sign for a left lane dropped at an interchange.
The figure shows segments of one direction of a vertical highway
labeled I-61 & U.S. 56 at the bottom, depicted with three lanes,
with the direction of travel from the bottom to the top of the figure.
Near the top of the figure, the left lane is shown exiting to the
left (labeled U.S. 56), and the center and right lanes are shown
continuing straight ahead (labeled I-61). A series of four horizontal
rectangular green signs with white legends and borders are shown
along the highway from the bottom to the top of the figure. An asterisk
is shown to the left of the notation "The upper half of a Left
Exit plaque, which contains the word LEFT, may have a black legend
and border on a yellow background."
The first sign is shown extending across the left lane, over the
center lane, and to the middle of the right lane of the highway.
It is shown with a plan view of the exit in the middle of the sign,
consisting of a two-headed arrow with the two shafts emanating from
a combined base, with one shaft curving up and to the left and the
other pointed straight ahead. The joined shaft is shown with a dashed
green line along the middle of the shaft from the base to the point
of divergence, and the straight shaft on the right is shown with
a dashed green line along the middle of the shaft from the base
to the start of the arrowhead:
- To the left of the plan view, on the top line, the word "WEST"
is shown to the left of a white U.S. route shield on which the
black numerals "56" are shown, the word "Lindale"
is shown on the second line, and the words "1 MILE"
are shown on the third line. Under the third line, a horizontal
yellow rectangle is shown with the words "EXIT ONLY"
in black.
- To the right of the plan view, a red and blue Interstate route
shield is shown on which the white numerals "61" are
shown to the left of the word "NORTH," aligned with
the top line of the notation to the left of the plan view.
- A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque is shown above
the top left side of the sign. It shows the words "LEFT"
on the top line and the words "EXIT" and "27"
on the bottom line. An asterisk is shown to the right of this
plaque.
The second sign is also shown extending across the left lane, over
the center lane, and to the middle of the right lane of the highway.
This sign and its plaque are shown as identical to the first sign
and plaque, including the asterisk, except that the words "1
MILE" under the word "Lindale" are deleted.
Just prior to the lane separation, the third sign is shown located
over the left lane of the highway. This sign is shown with the word
"WEST" on the first line to the left of a U.S. route shield
on which the black numerals "56" are shown. On the second
line, a large white diagonal arrow with a short shaft pointing up
and to the left is to the left of the word "Lindale."
Under the second line, a horizontal rectangular yellow panel is
shown as the bottom section of this sign, with the words "EXIT
ONLY" in black. A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque
is shown above the top left side of the sign. It shows the words
"LEFT" on the top line and the words "EXIT"
and "27" on the bottom line. An asterisk is shown to the
right of this plaque.
Just at the point of divergence, a fourth sign is shown in the
gore between the left lane that splits off and the two lanes that
continue straight. It is shown as a smaller horizontal rectangular
sign with the word "EXIT" on the top line and a large
diagonal white arrow pointing up and to the left to the left of
the numerals "27" on the bottom line.
Just beyond the divergence, a sign is shown to the right of the
lane that curves to the left. It is a vertical rectangular black
sign with a U.S. route shield on which the black numerals "56"
are shown. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "WEST"
in black letters and a black border on a white background. Just
beyond the divergence, a sign is shown to the right of the lanes
that continue straight ahead. It is a red and blue Interstate route
shield on which the white numerals "61" are shown. Above
it, a plaque is shown with the word "NORTH" in white letters
and a white border on a blue background.
