National Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 17, 2013Saris Cycling Group sponsored the first-annual national bicycling poster contest for fifth-grade students during the National Bike to Work Week May, 2011. The theme of the contest was "Bicycling is fun...and healthy too!" As a kick-off to National Bike to Work Week, the Oklahoma winners were announced at the Oklahoma State Capitol Building, May 16th. May Fahrenthold of Deer Creek Elementary School in Edmond was the first place national winner. See May’s poster and the other Oklahoma poster finalists in the Poster Contest link. The purpose of the contest was to encourage fifth-graders to think about how the bicycle can be one of the solutions to many of the current issues facing the nation. The contest intended to increase the students’ knowledge about the importance of the bicycle as a primary mode of transportation. Introducing healthy living concepts in a fun and creative activity is one step toward helping children make healthy choices. The Oklahoma first-place winner received a Schwinn Ranger Mountain Bike, a Planet Bike Spok light and a Lazer helmet. The first-place winner’s school will receive a bike rack manufactured by Saris Cycling Group. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation has printed the Oklahoma winning poster for distribution. Contact us if you would like copies of the winning poster. The national winner was announced May 20 on National Bike to Work Day. The announcement is posted on the Saris website at www.saris.com. The national winner will be awarded a three-day, all-expense-paid trip for two to Washington D.C. for the 2012 National Bike Summit. |
