Work began 1/9/06 with estimated completion in December 2006
Work began January 9 on another phase in the completion of the
Broadway Extension corridor. The project will widen Broadway Extension at NW 63rd
Street in an effort to enhance traffic flow and lower the grade to improve sight distance
and vertical clearance under the 63rd Street bridge. When the project is finished, there
will be four thru traffic lanes.
All businesses along the frontage road will remain accessible
throughout the construction.
The first construction phase begins with briefly closing the
northbound on–ramp, which will remain closed throughout the project.
Motorists wanting to go north on Broadway Extension from NW 63rd Street
will need to use the Wilshire on–ramp.
The southbound NW 63rd Street on-ramp will close later in the
project to install storm drains. This closure is only expected to last two to three days,
and will be done at night or over a weekend. When the southbound ramp reopens,
traffic will shift to the east to allow widening of the southbound lanes.
When southbound widening is complete, traffic will shift to the newly
constructed southbound lanes to allow widening the northbound lanes and constructing
a new 63rd Street on–ramp and service road.
During the construction process, temporary retaining and barrier
walls will be erected to aid safety and traffic flow. Once construction on the northbound
lanes is complete, a permanent median barrier will be built.
Haskell Lemon Construction was awarded the $9.1 million project,
which is expected to take about a year to complete.
The next phase along the corridor is the I–235/NW 36th
Street interchange which is scheduled to open for bids in September. So far more
than $100 million has been spent on improving this corridor.
