Modifications to the I–35 and Shields interchange will add a third lane of travel both southbound and northbound along I–35. Currently there are three lanes along northbound I–35: The on–ramp from NW 12th Street to northbound I–35 becomes the outside northbound I–35 lane while the inside northbound I–35 lane ends at the Shields Boulevard exit.

Changes will also include adding a ramp the will allow traffic from NW 12th Street to access northbound I–35 along an on–ramp that will also serve as an off–ramp from northbound I–35 to NW 27th Street. The east I–35 service road will also be slightly modified to allow improved access from the service road to North Broadway.

The west I–35 service road will be shifted further west to allow a new on–ramp/off–ramp facility. This will allow NW 27th Street traffic to access southbound I–35 south of NW 12th Street rather than merge into I–35 traffic in the horizontal curved section directly north of NW 27th Street. This same facility will carry southbound I–35 traffic exiting to NW 12th Street. This improvement eliminates the current weave of Shields Boulevard to southbound I–35 traffic with southbound I–35 to NW 12th Street traffic.

Access to and from Shields Boulevard will be modified to allow 2 lanes of traffic to merge into southbound I–35 rather than the current single lane on–ramp. This on–ramp will utilize a new bridge structure to carry the traffic over the new I–35 on–ramp/off–ramp. The existing 2 lanes of exiting traffic from northbound I–35 to Shields Boulevard will be maintained with the inside I–35 lane remaining a mandatory exit lane and the second exit lane remaining a through lane for northbound I–35.
